SUMMARY:You Must Remember This: Using the Science of Memory to Support Learning in a Wired World
DESCRIPTION:Add a Reminder for the Event:\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin the event on April 10!\n\n\n\n\n\n\nToday’s faculty tend to steer clear of memory and memorization in their classrooms\, preferring to focus on higher-level thinking skills. But do these goals have to be mutually exclusive? \n\n\n\nNew research suggests that teachers really can have it both ways\, using research-based techniques to strengthen both what students know and their ability to use that knowledge. Many of these approaches fit particularly well with educational technologies\, as well as with newly available AI tools. \n\n\n\nJoin us for an interactive presentation which invites teachers to look at memory in a new light\, highlighting technologies and techniques that help students build a solid base of knowledge efficiently\, quickly\, and with a side order of fun. Concepts presented will draw on the presenter’s book Remembering and Forgetting in the Age of Technology: Teaching\, Learning\, and the Science of Memory in a Wired World (West Virginia University Press\, 2022). \n\n\n\nThis event is co-sponsored by the College Teaching and Learning Science Graduate Program and the Faculty Development Center. \n\n\n\n\nJoin the event on April 10!\n\n\n\n\nUMBC and the Office of Professional Programs are committed to inclusivity and accessibility. Please note that automated closed captioning for virtual events is available via Webex Assistant through UMBC’s Webex Meetings platform. \n\n\n\nSpeaker Bio\n\n\n\n\nMichelle Miller\, Ph.D.\n\n\n\n\nDr. Michelle Miller is the author of Minds Online: Teaching Effectively with Technology (Harvard University Press\, 2014)\, Remembering and Forgetting in the Age of Technology: Teaching\, Learning\, and the Science of Memory in a Wired World (West Virginia University Press\, 2022)\, and a new book forthcoming in Fall 2024\, A Teacher’s Guide to Learning Student Names: Why You Should\, Why It’s Hard\, How You Can (University of Oklahoma Press). \n\n\n\nDr. Miller is a Professor of Psychological Sciences and President’s Distinguished Teaching Fellow at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff\, Arizona. She completed her Ph.D. in cognitive psychology and behavioral neuroscience at the University of California\, Los Angeles\, and currently writes\, teaches\, and speaks about maximizing learning in today’s technology-saturated and rapidly-changing world.

SUMMARY:Creating and Sustaining Presence: Bringing Students Back Into The Learning Environment Post-Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:Add a Reminder for the Event:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn the aftermath of the COVID pandemic\, what can faculty do to encourage active learning and classroom engagement?  \n\n\n\nThe COVID-19 pandemic threw higher education into a loop\, and there are growing concerns about student engagement. Many students face challenges returning to their previous course loads and on-campus activities\, and many faculty members are experiencing a lack of engagement and participation as students transition back into the classroom\, regardless of modality. The result – a disengaged learning environment for all. Now more than ever\, faculty need solutions to help them reach their learners in meaningful ways. \n\n\n\nIn this discussion\, Dr. Gannon will share his insights into creating a sustainable presence in the post-pandemic classroom\, accompanied by staff\, alumni\, and current College Teaching and Learning Science program students with diverse professional backgrounds. \n\n\n\nSpeaker Bio\n\n\n\n\nKevin Gannon\, Ph.D.\n\n\n\n\nKevin Gannon\, Ph.D. is the director of the Center for the Advancement of Faculty Excellence(CAFÉ) and a professor of history at Queens University of Charlotte (N.C.). He is @TheTattooedProf on Twitter. \n\n\n\nHe is nationally recognized as an educational developer\, history professor\, abolitionist and writer. He has an active presence on Twitter—as well as appearances in major documentaries\, such as the Oscar-nominated\, “The 13th\,” which focuses on the thirteenth amendment and highlights modern concepts of slavery and racism as it exists today. He is recognized as a fierce advocate for transformation in higher education\, as can be seen in his publication\, Radical Hope: A Teaching Manifesto. He regularly speaks on a variety of issues including transformational teaching\, inclusive pedagogy\, 19th-century American history\, current political climates\, and concerns related to the public good. His writing has been featured in The Chronicle of Higher Education along with Vox and other media outlets. \n\n\n\n\n\nPanelist Bios\n\n\n\n\nRyan Barron\, M.S.\n\n\n\n\nMr. Barron is a Ph.D. student in Computer Science at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC). He completed the College Teaching and Learning Science Certificate in 2022 and has been hired to teach four courses in Computer Science at UMBC. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoLynn Bilter\, MMFT\, NCC\, LPCMH\, LPC\n\n\n\n\nMs. Bitler is an adjunct instructor at a community college in Northeast Maryland. She teaches classes in the social sciences and mental health. She is a current student in the College Teaching and Learning Science Certificate program at UMBC. \n\n\n\n\nRami Quiton\, Ph.D.\n\n\n\n\nDr. Quiton is a neuroscientist teaching in the Department of Psychology at the University of Maryland\, Baltimore County (UMBC).
