Admissions Requirements
We have found that the most successful applicants to our program will have elements of the following profile:
- A Grade Point Average of 3.0 or above with:
- Introduction to (General) Psychology in addition to an undergraduate course in Research Methods or Statistics
- A focused Goal Statement demonstrating a basic understanding of the field of I/O and career aspirations with some application of I/O or HR.
- For those applicants who have not taken these prerequisite courses yet, a competitive application would include a plan to take these classes at an accredited institution (in-person or online) prior to starting the program and be addressed in the Goal Statement.
- GRE scores are not required for admission.
Please note that the above are guidelines used by the Selection Committee and that reviews and final decisions are made at its discretion on a holistic basis taking into account the entire application.

Application Process
Applications are only considered for the Fall semester. To apply, complete a Degree-Seeking UMBC Graduate School Application and use program name: Organizational Consulting.
- Apply online
- Submit your statement of goals as an attachment in the “Personal Statement” section;
- Submit your resume/CV as an attachment in the “Resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV)” section;
- Insert names of references into “References” section (Note: we require three.)
- Complete residency information to be reviewed for in-state tuition rates
- Request official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions to be sent to UMBC Graduate School, 1000 Hilltop Circle, Baltimore, MD 21250 or emailed to gradschool@umbc.edu.
All application materials must be submitted by May 1 in order to be reviewed (including recommendations and transcripts). Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. A complete application should include the following documents:
- Completed application including residency form (residency form determines in-state tuition eligibility);
- Official transcript(s) from each college & university attended;
- Non-refundable application fee ($50 online);
- Three Reference letters;
- Resume/CV;
- Structuring your Goal Statement:
- In order to enhance your Goal Statement which you submit with your application, we recommend that you structure your essay in a way that addresses the following points (as applicable):
- Your personal and academic background including any coursework relevant to Psychology in general or Organizational Consulting specifically (this is especially important for non-PSYC majors);
- Why you are interested in a career in I/O Psychology or Organizational Consulting including any career goals;
- How Organizational Consulting ties into any of your work experience to date
- Any research experience which you have had;
- Any mitigating factors related to your prior academic performance which you would like us to know about;
- This also is an opportunity for applicants to further explain their background and qualifications for the program and provide any additional information about themselves or their career experience that they feel will benefit the evaluation of their application.
Prior to writing this essay, we would recommend that you visit the website of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology or Personnel Testing Council of Metropolitan Washington to better acquaint you with the subfields and functional job areas in which degreed professionals operate. This will also assist you in identifying interests and career goals within the field of I/O Psychology.
Students Currently Enrolled in a UMBC Master’s Program
Students* currently enrolled in a UMBC graduate program who meet the admissions requirements listed above do not need to submit a new application and should instead fill out the Application for Enrollment in a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate Program.

International Applicants
The Organizational Consulting graduate certificate is a hybrid program with several courses offered online only. U.S. Department of Education regulations require students with F-1 visas take a minimum number of in-person courses every semester. The Organizational Consulting graduate certificate program does not offer enough in-person courses to comply with that regulation. As a result, no I-20’s for F-1 visas will be issued by UMBC for this program.
International Students Currently Enrolled in a UMBC Master’s Program
If you are an international graduate student who is currently enrolled at UMBC in the M.P.S. for I/O Psychology or other Master’s degree through the Office of Professional Programs and interested in applying for this post-baccalaureate certificate, you may apply for this program by filling out the Application for Enrollment in a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate Program.
If you are an international graduate student who is currently enrolled in any other UMBC Master’s program, you must complete the full application process for this program detailed above.
