Data Science M.P.S.: Clinical Informatics (with UMB)

Students can transfer in coursework from the University of Maryland, Baltimore’s Clinical Informatics graduate program to serve as a nine-credit Clinical Informatics pathway within the M.P.S.

Prerequisites

Admission into the UMBC Data Science graduate program and the UMBC Clinical Informatics graduate program.

Courses

  • INFO 601: Foundations in Clinical and Health Informatics
  • INFO 602: Clinical Information Systems
  • INFO 604: Decision Support Systems in Healthcare

These are 8-week 3-credit online, asynchronous courses that are offered either in the first half (Fall A) of a standard 16 weeks semester, or the second half (e.g. Spring B). Visit the UMB Clinical Informatics Course Descriptions for their current offerings and full course details. Since these are offered in an intensive 8-week format, the student engagement time in these courses is expected to be 15 hours/week.

Career Outlook

The knowledge and skills in Clinical Informatics are crucial to future success in patient care, biomedical research, and public health, as well as to health policy design and implementation.

Physicians who specialize in Clinical Informatics assess the information needs of providers and patients, analyze clinical processes, and implement clinical information systems. They provide leadership and expertise in the procurement, customization, development, implementation, management, evaluation, and continuous improvement of clinical information systems. They work with a large range of computational systems, including electronic health record systems, decision-support systems, practice management tools, imaging systems, clinical research systems, public health systems, and genomic systems. They find employment as Chief Medical Information Officers, researchers, educators, and in industry, all of which are in high demand.
