Optimal Ways to Network Using LinkedIn

Networking is an important aspect of every job. There are many opportunities to network in person, some of which UMBC offers, such as career fairs and alumni events.

LinkedIn is the perfect app to help build your network. It helps you build beneficial connections by connecting you to other professionals.

Build Your Brand

By building your brand on your LinkedIn, you can show your variety of skill sets. Some of these may not fit on your resume. You can show off your skill sets by keeping your audience in mind. Additionally, you can emphasize keywords and skills that will catch the attention of job recruiters or mentors.

Your profile photo is also essential. It’s one of the first things people see that will give an impression of you. The picture should look professional, with a generic background, good lighting, and focus on your face. The good news is that this photo does not have to be taken by a professional, as smartphones nowadays have phenomenal cameras.

Make Your Profile Unique

Do your best not to use generic language. Many people can be “driven” or “a hard worker,” instead, try to focus these broad claims on your individual experience.  For example, you could say that you enjoy exploring your creativity with your experience in Adobe Photoshop.

With the rise of virtual networking events, using your LinkedIn URL like a business card would be pertinent, as this can help people learn more about you and your work. You can also personalize this URL to have your name and your certifications.

The best way to differentiate your profile is to use every opportunity within your profile to highlight your skill and your accomplishments. Make sure your profile has the schools you graduated from, the places you have worked or are currently working, and what experiences you have learned from within those roles. We also recommend letting your personality shine through by including hobbies and interests you have outside of work, as this will help connect you to people who might not be in the same professional circles as you.

Help Recruiters Help You

LinkedIn is perfect if you are looking for a possible career, as it is possible to show that you are looking for work within the settings of your profile.  Now that people know that you are looking for work, let recruiters on your profile know what position you are looking for by stating it within your profile. Another thing recruiters want is a link to your resume on your profile.

Stay Active

You would be surprised how many people forget to interact with other profiles. You can make the first move by requesting connections with people that can help you learn and grow within your career instead of waiting for others to connect with you. Post content with insights you feel are important and comment on other people’s posts.
