The Retriever Courage initiative was created as a response to the frustrations regarding sexual and gender-based harassment and violence by the UMBC community. As a community, UMBC is working towards encouraging a supportive and safe campus environment.
Honest Conversations to Build on Commonalities
The Latino Racial Justice Circle (LRJC) is working with UMBC professors, Felipe Filomeno and Tania Lizarazo, to initiate a community dialogue for U.S.-born citizens and immigrants through the Honest Conversations on Immigrant project. Through dialogue and digital stories concerning controversial topics, participants developed empathy toward each other and have begun to collaborate across their differences.
Leading Our Next Generation
Baltimore City schools partnered with UMBC to create the UMBC Math Project, leading to dramatic growth in student math performance. This data-informed approach helps educators have a conversation with students about their learning, helping them meet their individual needs, and as a result encourage them to grow to their fullest potential.
The Future of Learning
UMBC’s new Interdisciplinary Life Sciences Building (ILSB) provides an environment where students can actively learn and discover in a collaborative way. The shared, open spaces are designed to give students a sense of responsibility and motivation as they have a role in the next generation’s achievements.
