Meet HARP2
This 15 year mission became a reality on February 8th at 1:30 AM as UMBC’s Hyper-Angular Rainbow Polarimeter (HARP2) launched into space on NASA’s Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, Ocean Ecosystem (PACE) spacecraft. This historic moment is made even more significant as this “launch marked the first time NASA deployed a university payload on a large operational Earth science space mission.” This mission works to continue developments in “measurements of Earth’s oceans and atmosphere.” This will aid in the fight against climate change.

UMBC is Named A Fulbright Top Producing Institution
The Fulbright U.S. Student award allows students to explore and study abroad through their scholarship program. 2024 marks the third year that UMBC has won the title of “Fulbright Top Producing Institution,” within the past five years. Recently, Secretary of State Antony Blinken congratulates Present Ashby. His letter states that “this achievement is a testament to your institution’s deep commitment to international exchange.”

UMBC Mentors Regeneron Talent Search Finalist
Yi Huang, a UMBC associate professor in mathematics and statistics, has been mentoring William Gao for the past three years. Their research which includes a blend of “modern data science technology” and AI. This work “led to the development of a mobile diagnostic system to identify cancerous regions in tumor samples, which they hope will eventually benefit patients in remote areas.” Gao will now continue to Washington D.C. to compete against other finalists for the award of more than $1.8 million.

UMBC Donates 1,200 Pounds of Fish to Local Food Pantry
Yonathan Zohar, UMBC professor of marine biotechnology, and leader of the Aquaculture Research Center (ARC) at the Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology (IMET). Zohar’s mission includes “advancing sustainable methods of growing fish on land.” On February 22nd, 2024, ARC “donated 1,200 pounds of Atlantic salmon to DC Central Kitchen.” Zohar hopes that IMET will meet their mission of reducing “U.S. and global dependence on wild fisheries stocks.” Zohar also hopes that these donations will “provide a small level of societal benefit right away and close to home.”
