Leadership Communication Strategies That Build Strong Teams

Mic'd Up Podcast

UMBC Mic’d Up Podcast welcomes faculty, students, alumni, and industry thought leaders to share their insights and UMBC experiences.

In this episode of the UMBC Mic’d Up Podcast, host Dennise Cardona, M.A. ’23, sits down with graduate instructor Karl Douglas from UMBC’s Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and Leadership graduate program. Together, they explore leadership communication, emotional intelligence, adaptability, and the entrepreneurial mindset that today’s professionals need to succeed.

How Leadership Communication Shapes Professional Development

Dennise:

I’d love to start by asking you to share your professional background and what led you into leadership and communication work.

Karl Douglas:

My path was anything but linear. I started in sales and marketing and managed Walmart stores for Procter & Gamble. At the time, I spent most of my life traveling and living out of a suitcase.

Eventually, I wanted to focus on improving the lives of others. That desire led me into healthcare administration, where I continued developing leadership skills and managing teams.

Throughout every role, people placed me in leadership positions. Those experiences taught me valuable lessons through trial, error, and continuous growth. Over time, leadership development and communication became my passion.

Today, I serve as Director of Talent Development and support the growth of more than 7,000 associates across multiple states. My team created leadership development pathways that help employees grow professionally while contributing their unique talents.

We encourage people to bring their full selves to work. Whether someone enjoys baking, music, mentoring, or problem-solving, those strengths create value for the organization and the people we serve.

Why Leadership Communication Drives Employee Growth

Dennise:

What separates good leaders from truly effective leaders?

Karl Douglas:

Good leaders manage performance. Effective leaders develop people.

Great leaders create environments where people feel valued, supported, and capable of growth. They invest in others and help them build confidence over time.

Effective leadership also requires consistency, emotional awareness, and the ability to make difficult decisions while maintaining trust.

Many organizations still operate with a top-down approach. They reserve decision-making power for leadership and ignore employee input. I believe every voice matters.

People do not follow titles. They follow leaders who invest in their development. If nobody follows you, then you are simply taking a walk.

Using Leadership Communication to Build Innovative Workplace Cultures

Dennise:

When employees feel valued, they contribute more ideas and innovation. I’ve experienced both supportive and unsupportive workplace cultures myself.

Karl Douglas:

I completely agree. Early in my career, I promised myself I would never treat people the way some leaders treated me.

When leaders believe in people and invest in their growth, something powerful happens. Employees gain confidence, develop skills, and begin creating opportunities for others.

One of the most rewarding experiences in my career involves seeing former team members advance into leadership positions. Their success creates a ripple effect that impacts countless others.

That is the true value of leadership development.

Reducing Employee Turnover Through Leadership Communication

Dennise:

Retaining talented employees creates long-term value for organizations.

Karl Douglas:

Absolutely.

Organizations spend enormous resources recruiting and onboarding new employees. Yet many leaders overlook the value of developing the people already on their teams.

When employees feel supported and see opportunities for growth, they stay longer. They become stronger contributors and help build organizational culture.

Leadership communication plays a critical role in retention. Employees want clarity, purpose, and connection. Leaders who provide those elements create stronger teams and better outcomes.

Leadership Communication Strategies for Stronger Team Performance

Dennise:

Communication skills matter greatly in leadership. What communication mistakes do professionals commonly make?

Karl Douglas:

Leadership is communication.

Every vision, expectation, strategy, correction, and relationship depends on communication.

Many leaders communicate only when convenient. Others avoid difficult conversations entirely. Both approaches create confusion and disengagement.

Strong leadership communication requires clarity, empathy, and purpose. Leaders must communicate consistently and invite feedback from others.

Poor communication creates uncertainty and weakens trust. Strong communication creates alignment, confidence, and momentum.

Leadership Communication Tips for Difficult Conversations

Dennise:

Many professionals avoid difficult conversations because they fear conflict. What advice would you give them?

Karl Douglas:

Difficult conversations require practice.

Many people build anxiety around these discussions because they assume the worst outcomes. In reality, preparation makes a tremendous difference.

Focus on facts rather than emotions. Address issues early before they become larger problems.

Most employees do not come to work intending to perform poorly. Usually, expectations were unclear or communication broke down.

When leaders approach conversations with empathy and genuine concern, people respond positively. They recognize that the feedback comes from a place of support rather than criticism.

Great leaders provide both corrective feedback and positive recognition. That balance builds trust and strengthens relationships.

How Leadership Communication Supports an Entrepreneurial Mindset

Dennise:

How do you define entrepreneurship in today’s workplace?

Karl Douglas:

Entrepreneurship goes far beyond starting a business.

An entrepreneurial mindset means identifying problems, creating solutions, improving systems, and delivering value regardless of your title.

My current role required that mindset from day one. The position was brand new, and no blueprint existed. I had to build processes, create systems, and continually refine the approach.

Every professional can think like an entrepreneur. The people who stand out do not wait for instructions. They take initiative, solve problems, and contribute ideas.

Whether you work in a corporation, nonprofit, healthcare system, or university, you can develop an entrepreneurial mindset.

Leadership Communication and Adaptability in Changing Industries

Dennise:

How can professionals become more adaptable in today’s rapidly changing environment?

Karl Douglas:

Adaptability starts with continuous learning and humility.

Industries evolve quickly. Professionals who rely only on existing knowledge eventually fall behind.

First, stay professionally curious. Ask questions and explore ideas outside your immediate area of expertise.

Second, embrace feedback. Invite others to challenge your thinking and identify blind spots.

Third, become comfortable with change. Change creates opportunities for growth and innovation.

The most adaptable professionals continue learning, evolving, and adjusting their approach as circumstances change.

Strengthening Leadership Communication Through Emotional Intelligence

Dennise:

How important is emotional intelligence when leading teams and driving innovation?

Karl Douglas:

Emotional intelligence is mission-critical.

Leaders need emotional intelligence to understand what motivates people, what discourages them, and how to bring out their best work.

Leaders who understand people build stronger teams, navigate conflict more effectively, and create healthier workplace cultures.

Innovation also requires psychological safety. Employees must feel respected and heard before they will share ideas openly.

When leaders combine emotional intelligence with strong communication, they create environments where people thrive.

Resources for Improving Leadership Communication Skills

Dennise:

If someone wants to become a stronger communicator, where should they start?

Karl Douglas:

Books and TED Talks provide excellent starting points.

I encourage professionals to explore leadership development resources, communication-focused TED Talks, and personal growth content.

Our organization even hosts leadership book clubs because shared learning creates valuable discussions and new perspectives.

The key is maintaining a growth mindset and committing to continuous improvement.

Final Thoughts on Leadership Communication and Growth

Strong leadership communication remains one of the most valuable skills professionals can develop. Effective leaders create trust, encourage growth, embrace feedback, and help others succeed. They communicate with clarity, lead with emotional intelligence, and approach challenges with curiosity and adaptability.

Professor Karl Douglas reminds us that leadership is not about authority or titles. Leadership is about investing in people, creating opportunities, and helping others reach their full potential. Professionals who embrace these principles will build stronger teams, healthier cultures, and more meaningful careers.
