Record-Breaking and Ready to Roar: Meet UMBC’s Largest Incoming Class

UMBC welcomed its largest incoming class ever. Over 2,200 first-year and 870 transfer students arrived this fall. Students jumped into campus life through move-in events and involvement fairs. They connected with peers and explored many clubs and activities. New and returning Retrievers shared their excitement about joining a diverse, supportive community. UMBC President Valerie Sheares Ashby encouraged everyone to embrace belonging and success as the new year began.

From Concert Halls to Campus Walls: Arts+ Transforms UMBC

UMBC also launched Arts+, a new initiative to elevate visual and performing arts. The 2025–26 season started with a sold-out Baltimore Symphony Orchestra concert. Arts+ will feature over 40 events, exploring themes like The Harlem Renaissance and Space, Place, and Justice. A campus-wide celebration will take place on December 5, showcasing collaborative performances and exhibitions. This marks a new era of arts-driven engagement at UMBC.

UMBC’s Winning Streak: 16 Years as a Great College to Work For

For the 16th year in a row, UMBC earned recognition as a Great College to Work For. The award highlights the campus’s strong mission and community. President Valerie Sheares Ashby and HR leader Lynne Adams praised UMBC’s commitment to faculty and staff well-being. They focus on creating an inclusive and supportive environment for everyone.

Championing Change: Tanzila Malik’s Journey at UMBC

Tanzila Malik, a senior majoring in gender and women’s studies, has been active in UMBC’s Women’s, Gender, and Equity Center. Through internships and leadership roles, she helped organize impactful events and activism initiatives. Mentors Lauren Allen and Zoe Brown supported her growth. Tanzila credits UMBC’s inclusive community and programs like Alternative Spring Break for fueling her passion for social justice and change.
