Using AI without losing your voice requires intention, curiosity, and a willingness to keep thinking independently.
AI tools now support everyday academic and professional work, from brainstorming and writing assistance to research and organization.
These tools can make work faster and more efficient, but convenience can create another challenge. When does helpful assistance become dependence, and what happens when AI starts replacing our own thinking?
In this episode of UMBC Mic’d Up, host Dennise Cardona, M.A., ’23, explores how students and professionals can use AI thoughtfully while keeping their perspectives, creativity, and critical thinking at the center.

Why AI Should Support Your Thinking
AI itself does not create the problem. Over-reliance creates the bigger concern. When people use AI thoughtfully, it can enhance their work without replacing their judgment or creativity.
Instead of asking, “What can AI do for me?” consider asking, “How can AI support the work I already do?”
That small shift can change how you approach the technology. Rather than allowing AI to lead your work, you can use it to support your existing knowledge and ideas.
Use AI as an Assistant, Not an Authority
AI works best when you treat it like an assistant rather than an authority. It can help you generate starting points, summarize complex information, explore perspectives, and improve clarity.
However, AI generates responses based on patterns and existing information. Human beings bring something different to the process through lived experiences, emotions, curiosity, creativity, and individual perspectives.
Think about the content you enjoy consuming. Do robotic sentences and predictable ideas hold your attention, or do you connect more deeply with writing that carries personality and character?
Human expression often includes unexpected ideas, varied sentence structures, clever language, and imperfect moments. Those qualities can create meaningful connections that standardized outputs struggle to reproduce.
Our natural creativity also protects us from producing a world filled with repetitive, cookie-cutter ideas. Our brains need challenges, questions, and opportunities to explore new perspectives.
That means the value of our work still depends on us. We must continue questioning information, staying curious, and developing our own perspectives.
AI can provide material, but humans determine what that material means.
Recognize When AI Starts Replacing Critical Thinking
Heavy AI dependence can cause important skills to weaken over time. You may notice this shift when you copy information without questioning it or accept responses without verifying them.
You may also begin avoiding the effort required to develop your own ideas. At that point, AI no longer functions as a brainstorming assistant.
Instead, it starts replacing the thinking process itself.
That dependence can lead to weaker critical thinking skills, less confidence in your own voice, and shallower understanding of complex subjects.
Over time, you may also struggle to distinguish between what you genuinely understand and what AI simply provided.
If you stop exercising your ability to think critically, those skills can weaken. That creates serious consequences in academic and professional environments.
Set an Intention Before Using AI
Creating an intention can help you maintain control over your work. When you establish a clear purpose, you create a direction for how you want to use AI.
Think about AI like a map that helps you understand different routes. The map can provide direction, but you still need to experience the journey yourself.
AI can help you organize your path, but you should remain responsible for where that path leads.
Before accepting an AI-generated response, ask yourself three questions:
- Do I understand this?
- Do I agree with this?
- How would I explain this in my own words?
These questions encourage you to engage with information instead of simply accepting it.
Keep Human Perspective at the Center
Meaningful learning happens when we engage with information and connect it to our own knowledge and experiences.
If you never give yourself time to process information, you may simply repeat what AI provides. That approach can prevent you from developing deeper understanding and stronger ideas.
Learning involves a journey. You encounter information, question it, connect it with your experiences, and develop your own interpretation.
Your perspective gives your work its originality. AI should support that perspective rather than replace it.
Start With Your Own Ideas
One of the easiest ways to maintain your voice involves starting your work independently. Before opening an AI tool, spend a few minutes outlining your thoughts.
Even a rough outline can anchor your perspective and give AI something meaningful to support.
The quality of your output often depends on the quality of your input. Think carefully about what you bring to the conversation before asking AI to contribute.
Once you develop your ideas, you can ask AI to analyze them or provide constructive feedback. This approach keeps your perspective at the center of the process.
Use AI for Refinement, Not Replacement
AI can provide useful assistance when you need to improve clarity, organization, grammar, or structure.
However, your ideas should remain at the center of your work. You should make the final decisions about what belongs in your writing and how you want to communicate it.
This approach allows AI to improve your communication without taking ownership of your perspective.
Verify AI-Generated Information
Never assume that an AI-generated response contains accurate information. AI tools can produce incorrect, incomplete, or misleading information.
Take time to verify important claims, especially when you use AI for academic or professional work.
Check reliable sources, review original materials, and make sure the information actually supports your conclusions.
Verification also strengthens your understanding because you actively engage with the information instead of accepting it automatically.
Reflect on What You Learn
Finally, take time to reflect on what you learn through the process. Ask yourself whether you could explain the concept without opening an AI tool.
If you cannot explain something independently, take a step back and revisit the material.
Reflection helps you identify gaps in your understanding and gives you another opportunity to strengthen your knowledge.
Why Human Skills Still Matter
When we consider the relationship between humans and AI, we must remain committed to developing ourselves as thinkers.
Your ability to analyze information, communicate clearly, ask thoughtful questions, and develop original ideas sets you apart.
AI can improve efficiency, but it cannot replace your judgment, originality, or authenticity.
In graduate school and beyond, people value individuals who can:
- Analyze information
- Ask thoughtful questions
- Offer unique perspectives
- Make informed decisions
- Communicate ideas clearly
These human skills become stronger when you actively practice them.
Keep Your Voice at the Center
AI offers powerful tools for students and professionals, but it remains a tool. When you use AI with intention, it can support your growth without taking control of your work.
However, relying on AI without reflection can weaken the skills you need most. Your curiosity, creativity, judgment, and perspective give your work its value.
As AI continues becoming part of academic and professional life, learning how to use AI responsibly will become increasingly important.
Stay engaged with your work. Stay curious about what you learn. Most importantly, keep your own voice at the center of everything you create.
Thank you for tuning in to UMBC Mic’d Up. Until next time, keep learning, keep questioning, and keep your voice at the center of everything you create.
