Life Science Breakthroughs | UMBC Industry News

UMBC’s Translational Life Sciences Technology program prepares students to enter an emerging field that has far-reaching, life-saving possibilities. The life sciences field is where such breakthroughs happen. In today’s Industry Roundup, we take a look at a recent NIH supported test of a new drug that may help slow the onset of Type 1 Diabetes in those at high risk for the disease. We also look at a mental health approach to social media, global warming and melting glaciers, and the expansion of creativity.

Industry Roundup is brought to you by UMBC’s Division of Professional Studies, offering a broad array of professionally-focused master’s degree and certificate programs that address industry needs while anticipating future opportunities.

New Drug May Slow Onset of Type 1 Diabetes

Those at high risk for developing Type 1 Diabetes could end up with a new preventative tool that may help delay the onset of the disease. A new drug, Teplizumab, was tested by a team led by Dr. Kevan C. Herold at Yale University and shows great promise. NIH’s National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) supported the work of this team. More research is in store for this drug to ensure its safety and effectiveness.

A Mental Health Approach to Social Media

It’s no surprise that social media is wreaking havoc on the mental health of many. It can be addicting, luring us in with its ease of instant access to everything and anything happening in the world. Psychologists share coping mechanisms for those struggling with the negative impacts of its use.

The Big Melt

Temperatures climbed 40 degrees higher than normal due to record-breaking melting of ice sheets in June. This abnormal spiking in temps is turning our weather very unpredictable, even though we’re halfway around the world.

A Great Source for Creative Expansion

There’s something magical about walking through the stationary aisle of a store. The smell of paper calls out to our senses, sparking that part of our brain we enjoyed using as children when first learning to write. An index card is one of those paper items that has powerful potentials when it comes to exciting our creative brains. If you’re a professional struggling to get that spark ignited, perhaps all you need is a colorful index card.
