Students Create Products for a Great Purpose
Four UMBC students, in a variety of disciplines, competed for the top prize in the finals of this year’s Cangialosi Business Innovation Competition (CBIC). These products included an assistive tool allowing kids communicate, an app that helps people find healthy and affordable food, the creation of an affordable modest fashion market, as well as a platform that provides researches a place to connect information and data.
Adult Learners Achieve Their Dreams
Returning Women Student (RWS) Scholars, earn their degrees after years of hard work, opening doors for themselves. Women, such as Karla Gonzalez and Lauren Hall, put themselves first and receive a higher education, despite the challenges they have overcome. Receiving an education at UMBC helped these women realize their potential and how to push their educational boundaries.
Advocating in Unprecedented Times
UMBC students, Nadia BenAissa and Sam Hertl, have worked to create supportive spaces online, making sure that survivor and LBGTQIA+ voices are heard, due to the shift to a virtual environment. In their time at UMBC, these students have worked with the Women’s Center to create a space where individuals can discuss their experiences in-person. Due to COVID-19, they shifted their in-person discussion group to online as well as posted on social media as a resource to students.
A Better Version of the World
Four students who graduated with the Class of 2020, are embarking on community-engaged careers. These students from different disciplines, are using what they learned during their time at UMBC to help communities at a local and international level. They are not only creating a positive change in a wide range of locations from Baltimore to Poland, they are also using these opportunities to grow as individuals.
