UMBC alumna Adrienne A. Jones makes history as Maryland Speaker of the House

UMBC alumna Adrienne A. Jones ‘76, psychology, was unanimously voted Maryland’s next Speaker of the House. Her swearing in created a new historic moment for the state. Jones is both the first African American and the first woman to serve in this role.

Creating Community Impact

Five UMBC students share their stories on how they are applying their talents to specific community-centered initiatives. These initiatives have shaped their UMBC journeys and strengthened their local ties. “Being a valedictorian for me is about honoring South Asian women feminists whose achievements were not as visible when I was growing up. It is also about the need to transform research and community service skills into direct activism.” —Samiksha Manjani

New Record Set – 14 From UMBC Receive Fulbright Awards

UMBC began participating in the Fulbright U.S. Student Program in 1970. Since then, Fulbright has chosen more than 70 UMBC students and recent alumni to represent the United States through conducting research, teaching English, or pursuing graduate studies internationally. UMBC has been particularly successful in the past five to ten years. In the last decade, UMBC has had 65 recipients.

Study Abroad Success Stories

Exploring the world helps students gain a new perspective on life and appreciation for differences. Exploring international learning opportunities stems from a desire to take on a new challenge and get out of comfort. Four students share their experiences with studying abroad.
